About the High Court of Madras

The Madras High Court is the second oldest High Court of India after the Calcutta High Court in Kolkata. It is located in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The court is one of the three High Courts in India established in the three Presidency Towns of Madras, Bombay, and Calcutta by letters patent granted by Queen Victoria, bearing date 26 June 1862.

It exercises original jurisdiction over the city of Chennai and appellate jurisdiction over the entire state of Tamil Nadu and Union Territory of Puducherry, as well as an extraordinary original jurisdiction, civil and criminal, under the letters patent and special original jurisdiction for the issue of writs under the Constitution of India.

About the Opportunity

High Court of Madras and its Bench at Madurai are looking to hire law officers on a contractual basis and shall be for such term as may be determined by the Government.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Maximum Age limit: Must not have completed years in respect of Additional Government Pleader 60 and Government Advocates (Civil/Criminal/Taxes). There is no age limit in respect of Additional Advocate General / State Government Pleader / Government Pleader and Special Government Pleader.
  • Educational Qualifications: A degree of Bachelor of Law from a University incorporated by an Act of Central or State Legislature in India or other educational institutions established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section-3 of UGC Act, 1956 or possess an equivalent qualification.
  • The Applicant must be
    • (i) a Citizen of India;
    • (ii) registered with a Bar Council under the Advocates Act, 1961
  • Experience:
  • As an advocate having practice of not less than ten years, out of which a minimum of not less than seven years in the High Court for Additional Advocate General, State Government Pleader, Government Pleader, Special Government Pleader.
  • As an advocate having practice of not less than seven years, out of which a minimum of not less than five years in the High Court for Additional Government Pleader.
  • An advocate having practice of not less than five years, out of which a minimum of not less than three years in the High Court for Government Advocate (Civil Side), Government Advocate (Criminal Side), Government Advocate (Taxes)

How to Apply?

  • Address: The applicants shall send or give their application through Registered post or in-person to the Secretary to Government, Public Department, Secretariat, Chennai – 600 009.
  • The envelope should be superscribed as “Application for the post of Additional Advocate General/State Government Pleader/ Government Pleader/Special Government Pleader/ Additional Government Pleader / Government Advocate (Civil Side / Criminal Side / Taxes) (as applicable)”.
  • The application received after the due date/time will summarily be rejected.
  • Documents: A detailed bio-data/ CV containing the educational qualifications of the applicant (along with self attested copies of such certificates), particulars of previous jobs held/work experience, notable/reported cases argued/handled, panels/ assignments previously/currently held.
  • A letter from a senior of 25 years experience or from a recognized Bar or Advocates Association of the High Court to establish the minimum practice required for the post applied.
  • Attestation by Authority: A self attested copy of the registration certificate of the applicant with the concerned Bar Council.
